Wolverton’s in trouble.  His knee came out second best with the wall during his fall.  It’s stiffening up already and every step’s like fire.

The window bought him a little time, but now he’s crippled and whatever aberration was up in that room will be looking for him.  Past the mouth of the alley Wolverton sees the neon sign of a convenience store, shining bright with hope.

Wolverton doesn’t have a Beowulf cluster, a circle of stone or even a centimetre of copper wire.  What he does have is a serious disregard for his own safety.  That and a plastic whistle.
